Eating With The Seasons For A Reason

Eating With The Seasons For A Reason

When it comes to healthy eating, there are so many different ways to go about it. For a lot of people, it’s all about those big salads, grilled chicken, and avocados (no shade to those classics—love them, too!). But there’s a whole other side to nutrition that we don’t talk about enough: eating with the seasons.

So why should we care about what’s in season? Let’s break it down:

🌍 Sustainability: Better For The Planet

Eating seasonally isn’t just about eating what tastes good; it’s about choosing foods that are grown when nature intended. When you buy fruit and veg that are in season, they’re usually grown locally, meaning fewer miles travelled from farm to table. Less transport = less pollution.  Plus, local farmers often don’t need to rely on chemicals to grow seasonal produce, which means you’re getting fresher, cleaner food. So, it’s a win for your plate and the planet!

For example, think of those juicy strawberries in the summer or hearty pumpkins in the autumn. When they’re in season, they’re not just fresher; they’ve been grown with a little more love and a lot less intervention.

🍏 Nutrition: Nature Knows Best

Here’s the thing: foods are at their nutritional best when they’re in season. It’s like they’re showing off!  When produce is picked at its peak, it’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can give your body exactly what it needs, just when it needs it. For example, citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are in season during the winter, providing a natural boost of Vitamin C during cold and flu season. Coincidence? I think not!

Also, if you’re eating a variety of seasonal produce throughout the year, you’re automatically diversifying your diet. So instead of sticking to the same old apples and bananas, you’re trying new, colourful, and nutrient-dense foods every season.

During the winter, as the weather grows colder, there’s an abundance of root vegetables, which means more hearty, comforting meals. With Christmas around the corner, eating and socialising become a big part of the season. There’s often a lot of stigma about gaining weight over this period, but it’s something that naturally happens. Your body needs that extra bit of fat to keep you warm in the winter months, and there’s no shame in embracing that! Just make sure you're moving your body too, dancing counts!

😋 Better Flavour: Taste That Pops

You know how some foods just taste better at certain times of the year? That’s because they’re in season! When fruits and vegetables are picked at the right time, they’re naturally sweeter, juicier, and just… better.

Think of those fresh, sweet berries in the summer that practically melt in your mouth, or the crisp, earthy goodness of autumn squash. When you eat seasonally, it’s like getting the full concert experience, not just a quick listen on the radio. 🎶🎸 So, skip the out-of-season Strawberries that taste watery and treat yourself to the real thing when the time is right!

💸 Cost-Effective: Treat Your Wallet, Too

Here’s the cherry on top: seasonal eating is budget-friendly! When fruits and vegetables are in season, they’re more abundant, which means lower prices. Buying local, in-season produce is a great way to save some money and support local farmers. Instead of paying extra for that winter peach that’s been shipped halfway around the world, why not enjoy a crunchy, local apple?

🌿Conclusion: Tune Into Nature’s Rhythm

Eating with the seasons isn’t just about what’s on your plate; it’s about slowing down, being present, and enjoying what nature has to offer. It’s a chance to connect with your food, try new things, and give your body exactly what it needs when it needs it.

So, next time you’re at the farmers’ market or supermarket, take a peek at what’s in season. Not only will your taste buds thank you, but so will the planet, your body, and even your wallet. Ready to eat with the seasons?
